Design Values

Eric’s first concern is making sure the client is happy, but there are several design elements that he cares about as well.  Here are a few of them:

  • Honesty:  Find opportunities to showcase structure and material.

  • Cultural relevance:  Understand local culture and reflect it where appropriate.

  • Articulation:  Create opportunities to distinguish the parts of the building.

  • Interaction:  Make comfortable spaces that invite people to interact.

  • Execution:  Get the details right, especially where they will be most visible.

  • Exploration:  Find creative and efficient ways to solve problems.

  • Solar orientation:  Make good use of natural light.

  • Function:  Make sure the building satisfies the client’s needs.

Testimonials

“I would highly recommend Eric Douglas’ architectural services. Eric did a great job on a modest renovation project. In addition to the project design, he navigated the permit application through the District approval process, including clarifying related bylaw and zoning issues. His professional services were timely, on budget, and completed in a very professional manner. He responded to all my questions and always gave me cost effective suggestions to choose from which was greatly appreciated. Overall, his professionalism is exemplary.”

–Robert Nelles, home owner in West Vancouver

“Eric’s vision for a culturally sensitive, functional response depot for the Canadian Coast Guard resulted in a facility that exceeds expectations in every way imaginable. This hard-working building is proof that functionality and stirring beauty are not mutually exclusive. It is also a physical embodiment of the essential, gradual process of healing and reconciliation between the Indigenous inhabitants of Turtle Island and Canadians. The Canadian Coast Guard is incredibly proud of the building and are grateful for Eric’s pivotal role in making this dream a reality.”

“I had the pleasure of working with Eric Douglas for the past two years on a project in Port Hardy. His eye for detail and innovative design created a flawless West Coast feel that was encompassed throughout the building. The completed project is beautifully appointed but does not take away from its functionality or use. As a builder working with Eric, he was collaborative and respectful to obstacles that arose during the build, and I look forward to our paths crossing again.”
